Decentraland interview at NFT Show Europe

Bay was asked to interview Sam Hamilton, Decentraland’s Creative Director on the mainstage of NFT Show Europe 2022. Sam spoke on the theme of their interview, “The first-ever virtual world owned by its users”. Bay moderated questions live from the audience as well as asking the questions from the Decentraland community that she had gathered in advance.

Bay arranged for the interview to be filmed for the community, and donated the recording to the Decentraland DAO Youtube channel. You can watch the full interview there and above.

Bay: How do you see Decentraland being different from other platforms and metaverses?

Sam: The main thing is philosophy, Decentraland’s core values, changing the way the Internet is at the moment. Decentraland tries to give power back to the people whereas other metaverse projects are mostly built to exclusively make money. 

As a creative director, can you describe Decentraland’s value aside from brands and exhibitions? 

Real value is social change. We are educating people about web3 philosophy. Decentraland has onboarded thousand of players for the last couple of years. They educate about understanding web3 principles, crypto currencies and decentralization. Decentraland truly believes in stopping the monopolies controlling the internet. The reason why Sam is so passionate about what he is doing is that he doesn’t want his kids to grow up in a world controlled by Facebook. 

What is the Decentraland Community / DAO?

A DAO is a “Decentralized Autonomous Organization” – a self-organising, community-led way of managing an organisation which has been made possible by web3. The Decentraland DAO owns the most important smart contracts and assets that make up Decentraland. It also owns a substantial purse of MANA (Decentraland’s currency) which allows it to fund community initiatives throughout Decentraland.

Through the DAO, Decentraland’s community is in control of the policies determining how the world behaves. DAO members can vote on governance, content moderation, grant allocation, and LAND and wearable policies. The aim is that Decentraland thrives as the metaverse fully owned by its users.
